Bob will be on the Red Velvet Media Blogtalk Radio show September 10, 2010 at 8am pst/11am est click here to go live to show on Sept 10,2010 show will be availabe as podcast

Bob Gruen is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. From Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones; Tina Turner to Madonna; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; John Lennon to Johnny Rotten, he has captured the music scene for over forty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition.

Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko’s personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and, standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign - two of the most popular of Lennon’s images.

Bob has worked with major rock acts such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Aerosmith, Kiss & Alice Cooper. In 1989, he documented the epic trip to Russia of the “Moscow Music Peace Festival” featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue and Bon Jovi. For many years Bob was the official photographer for the New York New Music Seminar, covering dozens of aspiring new bands in the course of a summer week.

As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the ‘70s, Bob specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. He toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie.

This seminal body of work reflects a profound commitment and long-standing personal friendship with the artists. His wealth of personal experiences and uncanny memory provide the most illuminating and comprehensive histories of rock youth culture.

His work has been published in magazines and documentaries around the world, and he has had books of his work with John Lennon, the Clash, Sex Pistols, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and New York Dolls
.
In June, 2004, in London, Bob was presented with MOJO Magazine’s prestigious Honours List Award for Classic Image.

FAAP Museu de Arte Brasileira in Sao Paulo, Brazil, held an extensive exhibition of the work of Bob Gruen in 2007. Titled "ROCKERS" the large multi-media installation featured more than 270 photos from Gruen's catalogue, arranged in nine areas with six different background soundtracks. The exhibition was on display May 15 - July 1. More than 40,000 visitors came to see it. A 221 page catalog book of the exhibition, titled "ROCKERS", has been published in Portuguese and English by Cosac & Naify Edições Ltda of Sao Paulo.

Join Red Velvet Media as we talk to Artist Xany Rudolff!

Join Red Velvet Media as we talk to Artist Xany Rudolff! Xany Rudoff is a Los Angeles-based artist who works primarily as a painter, but has dabbled in acting, interior design and wardrobe styling. Born in Pasadena to an artist mother and art historian father, Rudoff moved with her family to the desert expanse of Apple Valley, CA, a site that would be crucial for her artistic development. In the wide, empty nothingness of the desert landscape, there were no limitations to Rudoff’s imagining, and upon returning to Los Angeles proper to get her B.A. in fine arts at the University of California, Los Angeles, she was able to see the city and the art world from the outside. Rudoff has previously participated in and organized group and benefit shows of her art and will be showing her most recent work, the Icon Series — which transforms vintage record albums and rock icons with the techniques used in Renaissance icon paintings — in a solo show this summer. She has been featured in the New York Times Magazine, Los Angeles magazine and Vanity Fair. Xany Rudoff's most notable collectors include: Benicio Del Toro, Pink, Alan McGee (Creation Records co-founder)

Harper Blynn - Loneliest Generation
Record Label: Baby Jackal Records
Release Date: May 11, 2010

To understand the Brooklyn quintet Harper Blynn, one needs to start with the band's inner circle. The album was produced by David Kahne (Paul McCartney, The Strokes, Regina Spektor) and Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris, Chris Whitley, Kaki King) and appears on Baby Jackal Records, a label co-founded by the band and Arthur Mann, co-founder of Rykodisc. But maintaining ties with movers and shakers can really only do so much. In the end, the gravitas and originality of the music itself is where bands can really distance themselves from their peers. And on their debut record Loneliest Generation, Harper Blynn takes a giant step beyond their contemporaries, and moves into a category all their own.

Inspired by the harmonizing of vocalists Peter Harper and J. Blynn, the band calls to mind a 21st century Simon and Garfunkel and crafts melodies that would even make The Beatles blush. Stunning for its precision, effortlessness and timelessness, Loneliest Generation is an intimate, well-worn and enchantingly familiar collection of 10 near-flawless roots-rock gems. Album opener "25 Years," is sweetly affecting, jangly and cradled in Blynn's impassioned crooning. There's a quintessential bounce to each passing second that screams superiority. It's repeated on the crackling first single, "This Is It," and never lets up until the disc's final second. From the tender ballad "All the Noise," to the country strut of "Luck Struck Kitty," there's a potency and a contagion that seems to emanate from the speakers.

Other triumphant moments include "Steal Your Love," a groove-based jam, guided by a slinky guitar line and Blynn's winning vocals; and "The Doubt," an aching ballad accentuated by falsetto, hushed acoustics and copious amounts of brushes. However, "All Pretenders," and "It May Be Late," stake their claim as the album's apex, with the former leaving it all on the table and throwing out all that's great about the band ––– deft piano, resplendent harmonies, air-tight rhythm section, crystalline production ––– and the latter feeding off a stunning piano line.

Loneliest Generation is perfectly executed folk-pop that's thoughtful, finely tuned and without flaw. The quartet is unabashedly cohesive, hopeful and brimming with potential. Fueled by ruminative declarations such as "We're not just hippie kids or disco queens in plaid, that's all over now, if every chance I take is one you never had, then how can I expect you to understand anyhow?" this is a deeply probing work that offers the viewpoints of a quarter-life lived, hoped for and wished for. In the end, what's probably most refreshing about the quartet is that in a crowded Brooklyn indie scene hell-bent on placing vanity above content and substance, Harper Blynn offer up simple, no-frills songcraft with an unassuming modesty and a self-confidence that is refreshing, invigorating and downright hypnotic.
